A Formal worship service involves choir and music from sources not just the contemporary scene. A Traditional service involves liturgy, a form of order, and elements like a Doxology, Gloria Patri, etc. that require some knowledge of the history of the church universal so that the memory can produce the words to these long familiar texts. The sermon is always biblically based with relevant references to how it affects our current life situations.
The contrast is less between these two types and the so called “Praise and Celebration Service” which has a totally informal order, lots of music and a rapid pace of motion.
